Study Programmes

Civil engineering is one of the oldest technical professions, encompassing all phases of the comprehensive process of constructing hydraulic, transportation, and high-rise structures: from planning and design to construction. It involves the production of materials and prefabricated elements, as well as soil, material, and structural testing, all while prioritizing sustainable development and environmental protection.

Higher education in civil engineering started relatively early: in Europe, in the mid-18th century, and in our country with the establishment of the Technical College in Zagreb in 1919. The first graduates in civil engineering in our country received their diplomas in 1923.

University undergraduate study in Civil Engineering

Since the academic year 2005/2006, a three-year undergraduate program in Civil Engineering has been offered according to the guidelines of the Bologna Declaration. It is open to individuals who have completed four years of secondary education and is focused on acquiring scientific foundations of the field necessary for those continuing their education at the graduate level, while also providing essential professional knowledge for those entering the workforce after completing the undergraduate program. Upon completion, students earn 180 ECTS credits and the academic title of Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering.

Graduates are qualified to design smaller and less complex structures and to oversee minor construction projects. As collaborators, they can participate in the design, execution, and supervision of larger construction projects. They can find employment in companies engaged in design, construction, supervision, and maintenance of high-rise buildings, as well as geotechnical, hydraulic, and transportation structures, in state and local government institutions, and elsewhere.

Graduates can further their education by enrolling in university graduate or specialist professional studies in civil engineering, as well as in programs of other technical disciplines. The undergraduate program has been accredited by the reputable international agency ASIIN and has been awarded the EUR-ACE Label certificate, which facilitates graduates' enrollment in most civil engineering graduate programs in Europe or employment in European Union countries.

University graduate study in Civil Engineering

The teaching on the two-year university graduate program in Civil Engineering has been conducted since the academic year 2008/2009 across seven specializations. The program is primarily intended for individuals who have completed the university undergraduate program in civil engineering and wish to deepen their knowledge in the fields of geotechnics, hydrotechnics, structural engineering, materials, construction management, transportation engineering, or structural theory and modeling. Upon completion of the program, students earn 120 ECTS credits and the academic title Master of Science in Civil Engineering.

Master of Science in Engineering graduates are qualified to perform highly specialized tasks in solving complex engineering problems, leading teams, conducting developmental and scientific research in their chosen branch of civil engineering, and pursuing further professional or academic development. They can continue their education in postgraduate doctoral or specialist studies. They can find employment in companies engaged in the design, construction, supervision, and maintenance of buildings, as well as in higher education institutions, governmental and local administration institutions, and elsewhere.

The graduate program has been accredited by the international agency ASIIN and awarded the EUR-ACE Label certificate, thus opening the doors of Europe to Master of Science in Engineering graduates in Civil Engineering as well.

Enrollment in the undergraduate program in Civil Engineering

Starting from the academic year 2010/2011, the State Matura (National High School Graduation Exam) was introduced as a replacement for entrance exams. For additional information on applying to study programs, please visit the website www.postani-student.hr of the Central Application Office.

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

DOCTORAL PROGRAMME

Doctoral programme is carried out in the scientific area of technical sciences, in several research branches in the field of civil engineering and in the fields of fundamental technical sciences (geotechnics, hydro engineering, engineering structures, materials in civil engineering, engineering mechanics, construction management and transportation engineering).

Upon completion of the doctoral program, the academic title of Doctor of Technical Sciences in the fields of civil engineering and basic technical sciences is awarded. The program is based on conducting competitive scientific research within the framework of relevant national and international scientific projects that have a very good possibility of application in practice.

More information about the program can be found under the link.

UNIVERSITY SPECIALIST PROGRAMME

The university specialst programme is conducted in the field of technical sciences in three programmes: Civil Engineering, Earthquake Engineering and Water Loss Management. In addition, the study programme Civil Engineering is offered in the following areas: Hydro Engineering, Structural Engineering, Bridges, Organization and Management in Construction and Fire Engineering.

Upon completition of the degree programme, the academic title specialist (spec.) is awarded with a professional title corresponding to the degree program title.

Further information on the individual degree programs can be found under the link.
