Doctoral Programme

The academic degree of Doctor of Science (Ph.D.) in the field of civil engineering has been awarded by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Zagreb since its foundation in 1919, first as the former High Technical School and later as the Technical Faculty in Zagreb. The first dissertation in the field of civil engineering was defended in 1922. For decades after its establishment, the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Zagreb was the only institution in Croatia that awarded doctoral degrees in the scientific field of civil engineering.
In the academic year 1963/1964, the Faculty of Civil Engineering started organizing postgraduate scientific courses leading to the academic degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.). Since its establishment, the program of postgraduate studies has been revised on several occasions. In the academic year 1995/1996, the Faculty started implementing reformed postgraduate scientific studies leading to the academic degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D.

During the last reform between 2003 and 2006, the master’s degree program was abandoned, and since then postgraduate studies have been conducted as postgraduate doctoral studies (Ph.D.) and postgraduate specialist studies.

In the academic year 2005/2006, the Faculty received (preliminary) approval from the Senate of the University of Zagreb and on July 10, 2007, approval from the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports to conduct postgraduate university studies (doctoral studies) structured according to the principles of the Bologna Declaration. The studies were carried out in the scientific field of technical sciences, in the scientific fields of civil engineering and fundamental technical sciences, corresponding to the following main subjects: geotechnics, hydro engineering, engineering structures, materials in construction, engineering mechanics, construction management and transportation engineering.

The reaccreditation process was carried out by the Agency for Science and Higher Education (AZVO) in 2016 and resulted in the awarding of a high-quality grade and certificate for the Civil Engineering Doctoral Program.
