Field education in the organization of
Chair for Metal Structures

To enable students to confirm and expand theoretical knowledge and provide an opportunity for direct contact with the profession, field education is regularly organized as part of the courses at the Chair for Metal Structures.
                                                                                                                   

As part of the course Metal Structures 2, a visit to the KFK company for the design and production of facade panels in Rugvica was organised on December 8, 2023. KFK is one of the largest European producers of glass facade systems. The students had the opportunity to learn about different facade systems and see the production process of facade panels at first hand, from cutting and processing of sheet metal to assembling the elements into a finished facade panels. The students also saw a plant for testing facade panels, a plant for manufacturing glass and a production plant for manufacturing aluminium and steel facade substructures.

As part of the course Metal Structures 3, a visit to the Zagreb Cathedral construction site was organized in March 2023, where urgent measures are being carried out as part of the complete seismic rehabilitation. The students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the concept of the complete rehabilitation of the cathedral and to see the ongoing work on the rehabilitation of the vaults. The students also saw modular scaffold used for internal and external support of parts of the cathedral and for urgent rehabilitation work. At the end of the visit, the students observed the assembly of the steel platform for supporting the scaffold on the north tower, designed by the staff of the Chair for Metal Structures.
Topic: TOUR OF THE ZAGREB CATHEDRAL CONSTRUCTION SITE Excursion programme:         - presentation of the measures for complete seismic rehabilitation of the                cathedral         - tour of the attic of the cathedral and the vaults damaged by the                          earthquake         - tour of the external and internal modular scaffolds         - observation of the assembly of the steel platform.

As part of the course Metal structures 2, at the end of 2022, a visit was organized to the production site of Vertiv in Rugvica. Vertiv is a world leader in telecommunications and IT infrastructure with many years of experience in the development and production of integrated modular solutions, energy systems, air conditioning systems and complete solutions for the oil, telecommunications and IT industry. Students had the opportunity to experience a multidisciplinary work environment and learn that communication with all project participants is important when planning and analysing structures.
Topic: TOUR OF THE PRODUCTION FACILITY AND CURRENT PROJECTS Excursion programme:         - presentation of the company,         - a tour of the factory and current projects with an emphasis on Power           modules and Data centres,         - brief exchange of impressions.

As part of the courses Applied Metallurgy and Metal Structures 3, a visit to steel fabrication company Bajkmont d.o.o. in Sesvete is organized regularly.

As part of the course Applied Metallurgy a visit to the Welding Laboratory of the Chair of Welded Structures of the Department of Welded Structures at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb is organized, under the guidance of the Head of the Welding Laboratory, Assoc. Prof. Ivica Garašić.
Topic: WELDING AND TESTING PROCEDURES OF WELDED JOINTS              Excursion programme:         - theoretical base of electric arc welding procedures         - demonstration of SMAW, MAG, TIG, SAW welding procedures         - theoretical base of welded joint testing         - demonstration of non-destructive testing methods for welded joints         - demonstration of welded joint mechanical testing

As part of the course Metal Structures 3, in AY. 2012-2013, a visit to the TPP Sisak was organized, more specifically to the combined heat and power plant BLOCK C 230 MWe + 50 MWt, which was under construction.

As part of the course Metal structures 3, in AY. 2011-2012, a visit was organized to the Calcit d.o.o. production plant for the production of calcium carbonate fillers, granules and sand in Gospić which was under construction.

As part of the course Applied Metallurgy, in AY. 2011-2012, a visit to the Dalekovod d.d. galvanizing plant was organized.

As part of the course Metal Structures 2, in AY. 2008-2009, a visit was organized to the construction site of the Euroherc building in Zagreb, within which the existing reinforced concrete multi-storey structure was being upgraded. An additional five floor superstructure was made of steel, with composite (steel-concrete) floor slabs.
