Enhancement of hydrological and oceanographic data for assessing the exposure of transport infrastructure to climate change

Acronym: HOPIK

Project ID: 100-034/26

Funding: Europska unija – NextGenerationEU

Co-funding: NPOO 2021. – 2026.

Duration: 1.10.2025. – 30.9.2029.

Description:

The HOPIK project brings together experts from GFZG, GFRI, and UL FGG, as well as industry partners, with the aim of improving hydrological and oceanographic data and methodologies for assessing the exposure of transport infrastructure to climate change. A field measurement campaign is being conducted to collect wave data at inter-island locations across the Adriatic Sea, together with precipitation and water-level measurements in a previously ungauged catchment.

The collected wave data will be integrated with archived measurements and used to establish a spectral wave model, which will provide the basis for developing a map of the inter-island wave climate under climate change conditions. In parallel, a methodology for determining the Synthetic Design Hydrograph (SDH) will be developed for studied catchments by combining statistical methods and machine learning, thereby providing a robust approach under climate change conditions. For the ungauged catchment, field measurements will be used to establish a hydrological model of the area and to generate synthetic data.

By integrating hydrological and oceanographic data and modelling frameworks, the project will establish a reliable basis for assessing climate exposure, thereby supporting the timely adaptation and climate proofing of transport infrastructure.
