Small Constructed Wetland Systems: Improving treatment efficiency with carbon

Acronym: maliBU

Project ID: 100-045/26

Funding: Europska unija – NextGenerationEU

Co-funding: NPOO 2021. – 2026

Duration: 1.10.2025. – 30.9.2029.

What are constructed wetlands?

Constructed wetlands are artificially designed wetlands that mimic natural processes of wastewater treatment. They represent an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and financially sustainable solution, aligned with global goals of environmental protection, sustainable development, and climate change adaptation. They are built as shallow basins lined with impermeable layers and filled with porous substrates such as sand, gravel, and stones of appropriate grain size. Within such systems, wastewater treatment occurs through a combination of physicochemical and biological processes. The central, filter substrate layer is the most active component in the treatment process. Within the scope of this project, its efficiency is planned to be enhanced by incorporating carbon, either by mixing it with other substrates and/or by forming a separate layer within the constructed wetland body.

Project objectives:

  1. To design and construct a small-scale constructed wetland system for wastewater treatment, with partial replacement of the substrate by carbon, aiming to achieve treated water quality suitable for discharge into the public sewer system and/or natural water bodies.

  2. To experimentally investigate the efficiency of the constructed wetland system in removing different groups of pollutants.

  3. To optimize relevant process parameters to achieve maximum system efficiency.
