A course for 6/7 May
Autor: Alemka Kralj Štih

Dear students,

Basically, you were doing well in the colloquium, and certainly not always highly realistic which is understandable under our peculiar circumstances,. We are all deeply aware of the relative values of the online courses. Though, there is also the advantage of improving the writing skills, style and creativity. The colloquia for the students whose family names are from K to T, will get colloquia next week.

Please, avoid copy-paste method from the internet; when I come to such sentences as :” We considered the proportions of trials rated by review authors at unclear and high risk of bias as surrogates for poor reporting and inadequate methods”, I cannot grade them. Luckily 90% of students are making a huge effort of producing creative works.

When you see many articles (a, the) added to the nouns, do not consider them as mistakes. You have just an opportunity to see your text proof-read, i.e.lektoriran). The use of articles improves the style and makes you aware of their necessary use. When I added my words, it means that we learned them, they must be in your notebooks, and they are the words most often applied in C.E. Of course, when I asked for the translation of the word promjena, it was not change to be applied, but adaptation, alteration, or modification.

Secondly, the everyday words, such as: zapoceti ili promjene upucuju na trazenje strucnijih izraza koji se rabe u inzenjerstvu. When you will be writing your reports in English in your future jobs you are not supposed to repeat hundred times the same word when there are dozens of synonyms around.

Some of the words in the test originate from PPT-s, such as bridge members: piles (piloti), piers (stupovi). Needless to say, the words indicated at the end of  each of PPT-s are to be learned.

All our hopes of getting back to the Faculty at the beginning of May shattered. We are resuming the lesson VI, but just with one exercise. Go to the video clip, “What is Wrong Here and have a look at it. Fran and Viktorija will answer the exercise 3 on the page 21. As the most of you have colloquia to correct, and there is a long hm bellow, we will stop here with expanding the lesson.

As I have seen in the colloquia, many students were unwilling to go back to the first lessons and revise the words. Therefore, we are going to revise technical and business vocabulary:

The homework of revision bellow should be sent to me by Mirta, and Josip: Make  THE WHOLE SENTENCES with the GIVEN WORDS:

  1. What are alternative words for changes? ________________________
  2. Restraints not BUT ____________________
  3. Low rise and Highrise refer to ___________________
  4. PLANOVI ZA NUZDU (U GRADEVINI, NE U VATROGASNOM SUSTAVU)_________________
  5. Hanging BRIDGE NE NEGO________________
  6. steel slab NOT BUT_______________
  7. project construction NOT BUT _________________
  8. competition for a project is –____________________
  9. Niskogradnja/visokogradnja- ______________________
  10. Synonym for “Starting up a project” is _____________________
  11. Stambeni kvart NE MORA BITI NOVO NASELJE: TO SU 2 DIVERGENTNA POJMA, A NE ISTA
  12. Stambeni kvart ______________
  13. Novo naselje _______________________
  14. We are stuck again with: konstrukcija I izgradnja: Big projects are often made of precast concrete, not but __________________________
  15. Znacenje rijeci graditelj _____________________-
  16. Copies sentences from the internet such as:” But developers dealing with rocketing land prices are under pressure to build further upwards.” Should be replaced by your own, such as _________________________________________________________________

Veronika should send me the sentences with new words from Marko’s PPT.

There is a Magdalena’s turn for PPT, do not make it shorter than Marko, and think of devising a practice for words. DO NOT GIVE THEM ON A PLATE!
