At the 9th International Conference on Road and Rail Infrastructure – CETRA, in May 2026, the paper entitled “The Challenges Croatian Experts Have Faced When Using Various Road Traffic Noise Calculation Methods Before and After Joining the EU”, authored by Tamara Džambas, Ana Čudina Ivančev, Vesna Dragčević and Šime Bezina, was presented.
The paper reviews the development and application of road traffic noise calculation methods in Croatia, with particular emphasis on the transition to strategic noise mapping in accordance with the Environmental Noise Directive. It discusses the challenges associated with the use of different calculation methods and presents findings from previous studies comparing predicted and measured noise levels under actual conditions in Croatia.
The paper also examines the results and limitations of strategic noise mapping in Croatia, highlighting the importance of reliable noise exposure assessments. It contributes to a better understanding of how calculation methods should be selected for different purposes, distinguishing between the harmonised methods required for strategic noise mapping and those offering the most reliable predictions for practical noise mitigation design.
