Jean-Marc Franssen has been doing research on fire in buildings since he graduated in 1982. After reaching the position of Research Director in the National Fund for Scientific Research Belgium, he joined the University of Lige as a professor in structural mechanics and fire safety engineering. He is also the director of the Fire Resistance lab of the University. His research topics cover the behavior of structures subjected to fire, with non-linear numerical models as well as simple design equations, and the development of temperatures in fire compartments, with zone models as well as parametric fire models. The programs SAFIR for modeling structures under fire and OZone for modeling the development of compartment fires are used by numerous research centers and design offices around the world. He was a member of the draft team of EN 1993-1-2, Fire part of the Eurocode 3 on steel structures. He is also the author of several books on steel structures subjected to fire, including the one recently published by ECCS.
