The DURABRIDGE project arises from the need to (i) integrate the acquired knowledge into a comprehensive approach to bridge assessment, taking into account complex interactive parameters: traffic and environmental loads, seismic effects and material degradation due to corrosion in order to assess their optimal durability and reliability, and (ii) develop guidelines and tools to support engineering decision-making for the purpose of optimal maintenance strategies that can be useful in managing transport infrastructure at the city, county and/or national level.
The expected scientific contribution of this research lies in the improvement of methodologies for the assessment of existing bridges and in the development of digital tools for decision-making support, while the socio-economic significance is reflected in the possibilities of applying the results at the level of transport infrastructure in order to increase its safety and optimize maintenance costs through scientifically based decision-making.
The project will be carried out through 7 main work activities: (1) Data collection and selection of representative bridges, (2) Engineering load analysis, (3) Corrosion modeling and bridge degradation assessment, (4) Numerical modeling and simulations, (5) Seismic vulnerability of bridges, (6) Development of maintenance guidelines and (7) Knowledge dissemination and transfer.
