The Department of Engineering Mechanics offers a wide range of mandatory and elective courses in the field of engineering mechanics for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb. The department conducts theoretical and experimental research in various fields of engineering sciences (fundamental technical sciences, civil engineering, geodesy, etc.) within the framework of national and international projects. The department has considerable human and material resources as well as references for carrying out structural design and structural testing tasks.
The Department of Engineering Mechanics is organized as follows:
Chair for Statics, Dynamics and Stability of Structures
Chair for Mechanics of Materials and Testing of Structures
Structural Testing Laboratory
In addition to teaching, the Chair for Statics, Dynamics and Stability of Structures is involved in research into structural systems in order to answer scientific and professional questions in the construction industry. Recently, the Chair's work has focused on research that has helped to analyse the condition of historic and other buildings affected by earthquakes, as well as methods for restoring critical elements. The research also focuses on the development of numerical models for a more detailed analysis of the resilience and stability of structures.
The Chair for Mechanics of Materials and Testing of Structures covers a wide range of activities focused on the study of material behavior under different types of loads and on the application of experimental methods to test structures or individual elements to analyze their actual mechanical behavior. Through teaching, scientific and professional activities, the chair deals with fundamental knowledge of mechanics of materials, testing methods and research into the behaviour of new materials in a structural environment.
The Structural Testing Laboratory is active in the field of testing materials, structures and their elements under laboratory and on-site conditions. In addition to short-term tests, the laboratory's activities also include continuous monitoring of the condition of structures using monitoring systems. The activities of the laboratory are closely related to scientific research and teaching as well as collaboration with industry in solving various professional problems.
