The Department of Transportation offers courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels of civil engineering studies. The faculty members of the Department of Transportation are authors of a large number of textbooks, books, manuals, and scripts in the field of civil and transportation engineering, aiming to facilitate the mastery of study materials. Additionally, the Department actively works on modernizing teaching methods by utilizing contemporary IT tools and familiarizing students with the applications of specialized computer programs used in engineering practice.
In addition to its teaching activities, the Department of Transportation carries out a number of scientific-research and professional activities. In the scientific research work, as well as in the postgraduate study, road and rail infrastructure and airport issues are represented. Professional work has always been an important segment of the Department's activities. Teachers apply their professional experience in teaching and scientific work and thus contribute to the quality of students' education. The Department's employees worked on numerous professional projects in the field of construction and traffic engineering, related to roads, surfaces and buildings, highways, airports, tram and railway tracks, and noise protection.
The Department of Transportation is divided into two chairs: the Chair of Highways and the Chair of Railways, and the Laboratory of Transportation.
The Chair of Highways conducts teaching activities in the areas of road alignment, design and construction of both the lower and upper structure of roads, road drainage systems, traffic noise protection, design of road intersections and tunnels, design and maintenance of pavement structures, airport surface systems, road equipment, traffic engineering, and traffic signaling.
The Chair of Railways conducts teaching activities in the areas of railway alignment, design and construction of both the lower and upper structure of railways, track maintenance, and urban railway traffic systems.
Laboratory of Transportation since its establishment in 2002 until today, participates in teaching, scientific research and professional activities of the Faculty. As part of the aforementioned activities, the Laboratory of Transportation conducts tests on the physical and mechanical properties of geosynthetic materials (geotextiles, geomembranes, geogrids, geocomposites). The quality management system of the Laboratory of Transportation is organized according to the norm HRN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Since 2020, the Laboratory is accredited in accordance with the norm HRN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for tensile testing of geosynthetics on wide strips and testing of geosynthetics by static penetration.
